Savor the moment
Posted by Carl on November 29, 2007
At least for a little while. Today’s positive news (from all outlets, by the way) stands in stark contrast with the years (yes, YEARS) of relatively bleak news concerning the Lynx. There’s a lot of hard work ahead for Mr. Wolff, and having come this far I’m hopeful that the groundswell of support will be maintained. Having witnessed first hand the loss of our AAA team and the departure of many fine people in the Lynx organization, I am painfully aware of the consequences of my own indifference.
But rather than look too far forward, or too far back, I’m going to try to just enjoy the moment.
Tomorrow, the work protecting the Lynx’s legacy begins for all of us.

Hear, Hear! Protect the legacy of the Lynx can best be done in growing a new and exciting history with the Can-Am League. Carol and I are ready, willing and able to help and I think Miles should know about folks that are willing to do pro bono work in marketing and advertising, etc.
But first things first - we need to be thinking about Naming OUR Team (that sounds so good, doesn’t it?).
I can’t wait to get those crisp season tickets in my hands - how I’ll savour the feeling!

Just a dumb idea… The Ottawa Capitals.
This way we could play the Quebec city Capitales and called
it the Capital championship!
Hopefully whatever the nickname that is picked, it
should be the same in English and French….
Can we use Lynx?

Kind of like the Rough Riders and Roughriders? Lynx is somewhat poisoned, I suggest a new name that is cool and sells merchandise. I’m not sure that a bilingual name that is marketable exists, the next best thing might be to find a name that TRANSLATED, is cool in either language. Alternate versions of uniforms could be used (ie: more to sell!).
When Montreal comes in for ‘09, will they be the Expos? Tri-colour hats?
Whatever they’re called, looking forward to more sunny days at the park……..

Funny, I had thought of Capitals myself a while back.

Agree. That’s why Lynx worked fairly well. I had a chat with the Toledo Mudhens broadcaster back in June, he suggested Lynx. Keep the name to build on the Lynx legacy.
About a month ago, my kids and I played the name game should we get a new team. Here’s some we came up with:
Keeping with the wild animal theme: Pumas, Panthers, Lions, Tigers and Black Bears. Also Ravens.
I thought about colours. After all, there is the Reds, White Sox, Red Sox, Blue Jays. How about the Purples (the Rockies had just won the National League) or the Mauves (works in French).
My daughter came up with the Skyscrapers. The Canadians?
I heard a suggestion of Canalmen once to honour those who built the Rideau Canal. Another suggestion is the 417s in keeping with Ottawa teams using numbers as their nickname.
Swingers, Hitmen, Batsmen for baseball themed names.
Another animal name we came up with was the Squirrels since there are so many of them around.
But the name I really like is the Ottawa Wolves (Wolffs?).

Wolff Pack?

Welcome back baseball! That was close. I like the Ottawa Canadians. Simple but effective, also bilingual.

raftmen? there is a brewery that use to have that name in Hull, the french side would relate to that, no problem

I like Wolff Pack. Seriously, you can have fun with it. Notice the names Pierre’s kids came up with, animals are fun, as much as I’m a traditionalist, this is all about fun. Come up with a wicked logo and you can market your gear everywhere (see Batavia Muckdogs).
With the lawsuits and apathy, I wouldn’t touch Lynx with a 3.1 million foot pole, I don’t think Miles will either. Absolutely understood that it was a valiant attempt at a bilingual name, but it’s damaged goods now.
To get the capital theme in, how about using “Capital City” in place of “Ottawa”.
Capital City Wolff Pack (Wolf logo on hat with simply “PACK” on the jersey).
Or, as mentioned a couple months back, so that we can keep Skratch (which the kids
love) “Capital City Kitties”. I also like some sort of slag on the politicians
Ottawa is known for: “Capital City Carpetbaggers”, but who knows?
This is fun to be talking about, knowing we’ll be enjoying baseball again, my other
wish list items include:
-non-stop contests and promotions (typical in indy ball).
-better and more varied food.
-beer that’s cheaper than $11.75.

My dream as a montrealer would be to resurrect the Expos name… id drive the extra miles to see the Ottawa Expos play..lol Lynx is perfect enough,,not like generic names like capitals..or nationals.. though they looked better in the older “cute” Lynx logo. rather than the eyes and claws bit that I never liked.
