New beginnings - UPDATED

Posted by Carl on September 4, 2007

First morning of J.K. for the “Flow Bee” (long story on the nick name).

The first day of school for Bekah today signals a new beginning at the Kiiffner household.  We leave behind a difficult, emotional, baseball filled weekend and start to get ready for school and DisneyWorld next month. I can tell you, there have been a lot of teary eyed moments around the house yesterday and today.

First off, let me offer my sincere thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to email and comment on the blog this past week.  The support and encouragement to continue with the Unofficial Ottawa Lynx Blog (UOLB) is greatly appreciated. I’d like to publicly note my gratitude and indebtedness to Patrick Shanks. Patrick, a loyal Lynx fan, has been a great contributor to the blog (word and photo) from the get-go. More importantly, he’s become a friend.  We’ll stay in touch. Thanks to Neate Sager for the input, guest-blogging opportunity and continuing support of UOLB - by hyperlink and otherwise. I also have to acknowledge the people of the Lynx booster club, Cat’s Pride - particularly the Sakamotos and Patricia. Patricia’s been kind enough to share many of her photos with me and has leant a sympathetic ear more than a few times. Thanks to Pete Toms and Todd Devlin for their kind words, both on and off the blog and to Friend of the Lynx Erin Nicks, who guided me through my first Media Day back in April - Erin, I still owe you and “the Driver” a beer.

Finally in the thanks department, I’d like to acknowledge everyone over at the Stadium. I was given more access than I could ever have asked for, and was never made to feel as if I was making a nuisance of myself (though I’m sure there were a few occasions). Kyle, Riley, Jodi, Dan, Michaela, Derek, Bryan, Ryan, Lorraine, Francois, Melissa, Josh, John (Bradley) - it sounds trite, but you guys are the best. Hands down.

But let’s move along now - there are still some dragons about that need slaying.

I’ll begin with the Ottawa Sun.  The Sun “set” with me back in May when they all but ceased covering the Lynx.   Yesterday, it seems that Don Brennan felt like he was “big leagued” by “minor leaguer” Dusty Wathan, who blew off his request for a post game interview in favor of his post-game meal.  Memo to Don:  Anyone who follows the team knows who the “minor leaguer” was in that exchange.  Get off your high horse; you haven’t bothered with the team for the majority of the season.  That your sense of entitlement was offended means precious little to me; I had more sympathy for Dusty’s post-game pizza than you.  You had no right.

Why, oh why, do I continue to bother with the Sun?  Sigh.

Finally, for this morning, I’ve decided that the blog will continue.  I know, I know.  You’re all relieved and will step off the ledge.  For now though, I think I’m going to try to avoid looking back; for those of you that don’t know, I’m a pretty emotional person.  I “well up” easily, and frankly speaking, right now I’d rather not.

Required reading - Neate has posted up on the Can-Am situation here, and most eloquently here.  My God, the man can write though, can’t he?   I expect to spill some ink, err… pixels, on the subject in the near future myself.
